The course
The course consists of five University days and five work based learning days in practice. The main focus will be on mentoring and facilitating learning in different settings. The course will enable qualified staff to acquire adequate knowledge and skills to assess proficiency and prepare mentors to assess student performance in practice and be accountable for their decisions to pass, refer or fail a student.
Content areas include:
- The Mentoring relationship and context of learning in and from practice
- Theoretical approaches to learning and teaching
- Learning styles and profiling
- Self and peer assessment
- Giving and receiving feedback
- Critical Reflective Practice
- Formative and summative assessment including sign off mentor competencies
- Evidence based learning and teaching - learning contracts and agreements
Admission criteria:
All applicants must be qualified for at least one year and be in current clinical practice in the area in which they intend to support students. They must have a student to support in practice and an appropriately qualified mentor in place to support them in practice in accordance with the NMC Standards (2006).
They must also be able to study at level H. Applicants who are not able to demonstrate this may be offered developmental work via the APL process.
Course fee: on application or free subject to local NHS CPD contract.
