This course aims to give you a solid introduction to the issues concerning the management of spatial information, taking the view that contemporary GIS is a specialised branch of mainstream IT.
This course is suitable for delegates wishing to learn about the fundamentals of building a spatial data infrastructure and database. A rudimentary prior knowledge of GIS would be helpful.
Course description
- Database structures - ordered and indexed lists, hierarchical, network, relational, object oriented. Hybrid structure
- Database connectivity - client/server linkage, data format compatibility, data exchange protocols, OpenGIS
- Data security - access protocols. Data distribution
- Data compression - vector and raster data structures
- Metadatabases - creation, maintenance, distribution, control
On completion of this course you will be able to:
- Design appropriate database structures for GIS analysis
