The Easter & Summer School will take place at GSA’s purpose built facilities which are located on the Stag Hill Campus of the University of Surrey, Guildford, Surrey, UK.

The courses available provide a stimulating refresher, booster course or an introduction to basic theatre training for people of all ages with a wide range of theatre interests and backgrounds.

GSA Summer School Details

 

JUNIOR SUMMER SCHOOL

GSA Juniors

(8-11 years)

27TH JULY - 31ST JULY (5 days)
10.00AM - 4.00PM

FEE £200.00

This course is for young performers who enjoy all three elements: Musical Theatre; Acting, Singing and Dance. It is designed to stimulate the creativity of the performer and aims to build key skills in team work, communication and confidence whilst building friendships and having fun. Students will work with tutors from the GSA faculty. There will be a studio presentation of the
work covered during the course at 4.00pm on Friday 31st July.

 

Youth Theatre

(12-14 years)

27TH JULY - 31ST JULY (5 days)
10.00AM - 4.30PM

Youth Theatre Summer School is designed for young people from 12 to 14 years, who enjoy performing. The course introduces you to various disciplines of theatre: Acting, Singing and Movement.

Everyone is able to develop at their own pace, no-one is forced to perform and there are opportunities for you to explore performance techniques. Students will develop key skills in teamwork, communication and confidence whilst building friendships and having fun! Youth Theatre Summer School concludes with a showing of work to family on the final day at 5pm. With minimal props and costumes this will be a celebration of the work achieved during the course.

 

Musical Theatre

(15-16 years)

27TH JULY - 1ST AUGUST (6 days)

10AM - 5.30PM

FEE £250.00

This course is designed as a stepping stone for 15 and 16 year olds who are too old for Youth Theatre and too young for other courses. There are classes in the three disciplines; Acting, Singing and Dance. The course is ideal for those wanting to explore performance in a safe and friendly environment whilst developing new skills. On the final day students will have the chance to present a  minishowing of their work to family. The students will be required on Saturday 1st August from 10am - 1pm at the latest.

 

SENIOR SUMMER SCHOOL


Intensive Acting

(17+ years)

3RD - 7TH AUGUST or 10TH - 14TH AUGUST (5 days)

10AM - 5.30PM

FEE £300

This course is designed to give aspiring actors an insight into what it takes to train as an actor. Through intensive practical sessions students will look at voice, movement and text analysis with focus on the actors neutral listening and responding and storytelling based ensemble work. These will be put into practice through short duologues and ensemble text. On the final day there will
be a short presentation of the work undertaken throughout the week. Trevor Rawlins, GSA’s Head of Acting, will also be working with you at a number of sessions. All students will be required to bring one monologue and one unaccompanied song fully learnt.

Intensive Singing

(17+ years)

10TH - 14TH AUGUST (5 days)

10AM - 5.30PM

FEE £300

If you want to improve and find out what your singing voice is capable of then this is the course for you. We shall teach you basic anatomy (how your voice works and how to use it), building song into your voice, acting through song and how to maximise your voice in an audition situation. There will be classes in choral singing, how to sing harmony and rudiments. You will have one to one tutorials with members of the GSA faculty in order to develop your vocal technique and Steven Luke-Walker, Head of Singing at GSA will be hosting a masterclass with you. This course will help you discover that technique is the servant not the master.

 

Intensive Beginners Dance 


(17+ years)

10TH - 14TH AUGUST (5 days)

10AM - 5.30PM

FEE £300

Dance letting you down at auditions? Then this is the course for you. For many prospective students the word dance can be daunting. This course explores your physicality and what your body is capable of doing. We look at the foundations for tap, jazz and ballet and introduce you to musical theatre styles. You will also be given guidance and expert advice on how to improve your dance and movement skills, which will build your confidence in a dance call situation. We will work on and use dance vocabulary so that you gain a complete understanding of dance terms which are used in general auditions.

Audition Techniques 

(Musical Theatre & Acting pathways)

Due to popular demand GSA is now running Audition Techniques for both Musical Theatre and Acting. The Musical Theatre pathway focuses on audition techniques in Acting, Singing and Dance whilst the
Acting pathway places emphasis on Acting, Voice and Movement. If you are serious and determined to pursue a career in the performing arts industry and want to gain a place at drama school, the Audition Technique Summer Courses are ideal for you. Our aim is to offer experience through mock auditions and practical classes and teach you how to prepare for drama school auditions. Guidance will be given on which audition material would be most suitable for you as an individual, how to present yourself and any areas you may need to develop in order to gain acceptance onto your chosen course.

Musical Theatre

The Musical Theatre Summer School provides students with a huge learning experience in the performing arts and is aimed at those who wish to top up their skills or learn new ones. The GSA Summer School is exciting and inspirational for anyone wishing to increase their knowledge and explore the art of performance in depth.

We take the art of training for musical theatre very seriously and although this course is fun it is also hard work. You will learn and understand the commitment and focus that is required to access professional training and the industry. By the end of the course you will have developed your technical ability in all areas of performance. We aim to create an atmosphere that supports your needs whilst giving you confidence to experiment and try new ideas.

There will be classes in Acting, Voice, Singing and Dance and you will work on a mini production that draws all disciplines together. This will be performed to family and friends on the Saturday. Students work closely with members of the faculty, professional directors, choreographers and musical directors.
