Programme Introduction
This course aims to provide students with knowledge and critical understanding of the concepts and key issues related to Maternal and Neonatal Health (MNH) and Safe Motherhood. Students learn how to develop a strategic plan for the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality, and how to plan, organise, monitor & evaluate evidence-based MNH programmes and services, taking into consideration the importance of effective functioning health systems.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a detailed and critical understanding of the concepts, strategies and historical development of the Safe Motherhood Initiative
  2. Discuss critically the causes and determinants of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity and the global strategy for improvement of MNH from UN agencies
  3. Plan evidence-based programmes and services for the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity and improvement of MNH
  4. Critically evaluate MNH programmes and services and explain the limitations of methods for measuring maternal mortality
  5. Introduce and use quality improvement methods for MNH services, notably setting of standards, carrying out maternal death reviews and criteria-based clinical audit

Pre-requisites - include:

  • Open to all health related disciplines, including medicine.
  • Non-graduates who are suitably qualified by experience.
  • Proof of English to IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 88 / paper based 570
