Programme Introduction

This Masterclass aims to give a comprehensive knowledge of HIV prevention and control in different settings and populations in order to prepare clinicians to deliver HIV services and programmes

Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of HIV virology and pathophysiology
  2. Explain the principles of diagnosis and management of HIV in adults and children
  3. Provide an overview about the natural history of HIV and the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of common opportunistic infections and co-infections
  4. Discuss current HIV prevention strategies and be able to apply these to different populations and contexts
  5. Critically summarise operational challenges of service delivery in resource-poor contexts

Who Should Attend

Anyone who works in the fields of international public health, medicine, HIV prevention and other related disciplines would find this course extremely useful.

Pre-requisites – include:

  • Open to all health related disciplines, including medicine.
  • Non-graduates who are suitably qualified by experience
  • Proof of English to IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 88 / paper based 570

  • Immunpathogenesis and natural course
  • CD4 PoC Testing
  • WHO Staging and ART Principle

Tuesday – Opportunistic Infections & HIV Related diseases

  • Cyptococcal Infectinos
  • Respiratory infections (other than TB)
  • Skin Diseases
  • Anaemia and malignancies
  • CNS manifestations
  • Herpes virus infections
  • WHO Staging – Quiz

Wednesday – ART

  • When, how and what: ART in practice scenarios
  • Toxicities, TDM and interactions
  • Issues in young people: Adherence and disclosure

Thursday – Prevention

  • Combination prevention: TasP
  • Circumcision
  • Microbiocides and PreP
  • Vaccines (HIV and other)

Friday

  • PMTCT and paediatric HIV
  • TB-HIV co-infection
  • Imaging
  • Mock exam part 1: clinical scenarios
  • Formative feedback Mock exam 1
  • Wrap up week 1, Intro Group work

WEEK 2
