This module is for healthcare professionals who require Level 5 academic credits prior to enrolling onto a degree programme. The course guides you through the process of preparing an appropriate portfolio including developing and demonstrating academic skills.

Healthcare professionals looking to expand their knowledge in order to progress onto a degree programme could benefit from this course. The aim of this short course is to prepare you to APEL onto a programme of study. You are required to demonstrate academic skills in order to fulfill the APEL requirements of the University. Your academic skills will be formatively assessed at the beginning of the module and developed through a variety of teaching strategies. The principles of research knowledge are examined and you will be supported to use research effectively within your written work.

This course will encourage you to reflect upon your learning from a variety of experiences and document these experiences in an academic piece of work (portfolio). The module enables you to develop your reflective skills in order to deepen your clinical, professional and academic knowledge. Using a model of reflection you consider how formal and experiential learning has developed your practice. You then apply this theory to practice and from this analysis you can identify gaps in your knowledge or experience. These gaps can then be addressed in your personal development plan (PDP) in the future.
