Introduction to this course
This module will review current trends in the diagnosis and monitoring of infection. It will evaluate strategies in the molecular detection and epidemiological investigation of bacterial pathogens. The module will also examine the current concepts in healthcare-associated infection and investigate challenges in infection prevention and control.
Topics covered in this course
- Current trends in microbial diagnostics and laboratory automation e.g. new strategies in sepsis screening;
- Principles of amplification-based technology applications of in-house and commercial molecular detection systems for selected pathogens e.g. Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae;
- Principles and applications of molecular epidemiological typing methods in the investigation of selected pathogens e.g. Meticillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium difficile, Mycobacterium tuberculosis;
- Healthcare-associated infection: principles, practice, aetiological agents, incidence, outbreak investigation, data interpretation, prevention and control strategies.
